Going Swimming

Photographing my friends while we hang out has served as a surprising, and irreplaceable education for me.

The advantage to photographing friends is there is a preexisting mutual trust. They let me get in close, and I have permission to shoot as much as I want. My friends allowing me to photograph them every time we spend time together, let’s me continually work on composing people within a frame.

I love blocking* in films and seeing where people are placed in a frame, can add to the mood and story.

Where can I place the subjects so there there is a story being told?

Photographing my friends and people on the street is no different than photographing you on your wedding day.

When I am not photographing a wedding, the learning process continues in everyday life.

*Blocking a scene is simply “working out the details of an actor's moves in relation to the camera.” You can also think of blocking as the choreography of a dance or a ballet: all the elements on the set (actors, extras, vehicles, crew, equipment) should move in perfect harmony with each other. Next, I will be sharing some of my favorite “blocking” scenes from various movies.
