“Can’t even begin to explain how happy we are with your photos. You’re so, so talented. We really wanted our wedding shots to feel honest, relaxed, and not overly staged. You immediately understood what we were after. We felt like we were being photographed by a friend instead of someone we’d only just met! Thank you for bearing with us through all our crazy, last-minute wedding changes and always being so easy to work with. So glad we found you.”

— Erin + Ian

It’s really important to me that we collaborate on your vision for your wedding day. What is the mood you’re going for? What photographs are important to you? For Erin and Ian, they wanted their photographs to look like how it felt. They asked for me to embrace blur, imperfection, and in between moments. They wanted messy, and happy chaos. Sometimes I let my shutter go really slow.

Having a mix of 35mm film and digital photographs was really important to them. Here are some 35mm film photographs taken with a Leica M6, and Kodak Gold 200, shot in natural light.

When it comes to film, you have a choice between natural light and flash (or both.) Erin really loved the idea of having the decor photographed with flash, which would give the photographs a real “editorial” feel.

Signing the papers, the ceremony, speeches…

I switched back to flash for dancing and party photos. The combination of flash with people partying reminds me of photographs you find of your friends from years ago.

Before I leave I always like to snap a few last portraits. At this point of the night the couple is unwound from the day, and it’s easier to just be yourself in front of the camera.

This is a good example of the magic of film. The photo on the left was the first photo I took on this roll. A little trick is to not take too many test shots. You just load the film in, close the back, and your first photo will give you that nice bleed of light at the top of your picture. The photo on the right is the second photo I took. You only get one of these every roll, and it’s pretty special.
