Richard Sandler

Welcome to my new online series: Photographers You Should Know

If there is one thing I love to watch : interviews with people I admire. If there is one thing I hate : too many interjections from the interviewer. The best thoughts always comes out when the conversation remains uninterrupted.

This is the beginning of a series featuring photographers I have found and that I think you should know about too.

The first episode features legendary photographer Richard Sandler.

I discovered Richard Sandler’s work on Instagram in 2018. The first photograph I saw by him was the one found below and remains with me to this day as one of my all time favorite photographs.

I knew I had stumbled onto something special.

His photographs are showcased in many places, like the Brooklyn Museum, Center for Creative Photography - University of Arizona, Houston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of the City of New York, New York Historical Society, and New York Public Library.

For younger generations - whose primary method for finding new photographers is through social media - makes this inaccessible world of photographers prior to the digital age, accessible.

Immediately I was drawn to Richard Sandler’s elements of high contrast, close, expressive portraits, while sometimes using flash. His work stands on it’s own.

“Timing, skill, and talent all play an important role in creating a great photograph, but the most primary element, the photographer’s eye, is perhaps the most crucial.”

Sandler kindly lends further thoughts on the subject of photography in the video above.
