"Mood" is Established by More Than the Obvious

But, it’s also a wedding photo.
If you a follow a wedding photographer on Instagram, you may not expect to see a post like this marked as a wedding photograph.
Now that you know it is from a wedding, does it take on a different meaning? Now you can imagine how the bride and groom may have felt that day, or the mood of the day as the sun started to set. Perhaps the bride and groom were too busy to even notice the sky, but it is such a huge detail to have documented for the couple. After all, that is one reason why the photographer is there, right? To document things the couple may miss.
Which brings me to the title of the article…

More Than the Obvious
Yes, there is the obvious “mood”, such as decor. But to look at your photos and recall how the sky looked that day. How special is that?
Here is the photo by the brilliant William Eggleston accompanied with a quote by his friend explaining the story behind the photograph.
“He went to photograph someones wedding and apparently he was walking around photographing ashtrays or something. But he then presented the bride and groom with a set or prints and they were just of the sky.”
Eggleston is known to just photograph what he wants. And that is exactly why anyone would hire Eggleston.
For his vision.
With that, trust is required. Trust that the photographer knows what they are doing. This allows freedom to work and create.
Can you imagine imposing on Eggleston’s approach? It would rob him of the freedom of his own vision.
We would miss out on the very work we love so much by him.
This is documentary wedding photography at its finest.
