One Room Apartment by Avard Woolaver

Avard Woolaver regularly shares his photographs of Toronto from the ‘80s, and even has a book out containing a collection of these photographs.

As you go through them you can’t help but
feel nostalgic for this time or place you haven’t even been to yourself.

I feel sad as I go through his photographs of
Yonge and Dundas and seeing how much color we have lost over the years in the designs of our buildings and signage.

The other day I came across the following photograph by Avard while scrolling through my Flickr feed. It was simply titled…

“My one room apartment, Carlton Street, Toronto, 1982.”

I wanted to know how he felt as he looked back at this particular photograph.

I think the two years I lived in this tiny apartment (1980-1982) were the peak of my creative life, so I wish I could go back there and try to recapture that energy, but not have to relive those years. I remember the wonderful music I listened to there. My two memorable albums from that apartment are Leonard Cohen "Songs from a Room" and Joni Mitchell "Court and Spark." Also the Fish Lady painting and the collage hang on the walls of my house in Nova Scotia all these years later. The photo is very nostalgic for me.

There you go - my favorite photo this week.
